Who gets paid? Traditionally the home seller pays their listing agent and the buyer's agent a commission for marketing, finding a buyer, negotiating the contract and assisting with the close. For both agents these fees are then "split" with their broker.

When are the commissions paid? First, commissions are only earned if your home sells. If it doesn't sell you don't pay! Second, you don't pay commission out-of-pocket. Your home sale is finalized at what is called a closing. (This is when you receive your money for your home sale.) Commissions are paid out of the money your buyer brings to the closing.

How Much? Commissions are negotiable. Traditionally 1/2 is paid to the listing agent and 1/2 is paid to the buyer's agent.
